4.Youtube DIY

YouTube is one of my favorite websites for the main reason that it is purely Do IT Yourself

Anyone can upload a video and it means that originality blooms from it. There are many examples of how people have become famous because of YouTube, Justin Beiber probably being the most successful from it. His original videos of him singing with a guitar fetched millions of views and caught the attention of a particular record label in America. This is one of many examples. For this reason i think that the way people use YouTube to converge different media platforms together such a film, advertising and music is exciting, fresh and can lead to great success.

Just a short blog...

3.Convergence Culture

What i understand from this idea is that a convergence culture in media is where all types of different media, for example television, internet and gaming, will all be combined as one.

As i'm not the best at defining things I researched on the internet a definition of 'convergence culture' and stumbled across this article http://maher.filfre.net/writings/convergence.html which states that Professor Henry Jenkins described a convergence culture as two things... 'the tendency of modern media creations to attract a much greater degree of audience participation than ever before, to the point that some are actually influenced profoundly by their fan base, becoming almost a form of interactive storytelling; and the phenomenon of a single franchise being distributed through and impacting a range of media delivery methods.'

Issues raised from this include,
-More competition to include more media platforms than your competitor
-The destruction of single media platforms
-Things like VHS and CD's will potentially become instinct!
(If they havn't already)

One example of convergence is the 'Fosters web comedy channel' http://fosters.co.uk/
A point raised in the lab sheet is whether or not this channel is an example of convergence. I believe it is because of the link between a comedy series and advertising. This use of Advertainment (see my other blog) is what convergence is about. Their distribution of television actors sketches over the internet further demonstrates my point.

People are always looking for the most things they can get with their money. By bringing all these different media types together you're engaging with what the consumer wants. This means that convergence is something that is successful and wanted by the majority.

2.Study exercise

This week we were asked to look at a study exercise involving different types of media from Mass to New

From the task i now understand how diverse and complex media is. Beforehand i would look at media as a simple social medium in which people could portray messages to each other whether that be through film and television or blogs and the WWW. Now i see it as a fundamental part of modern life. Without the ability to send such quick messages to one another, the world would run a lot slower. It also allows us to be more knowledgeable of other countries and cultures due to the fact the information is just 'a google' away. There's so much more i could say on the topic but i only have a few words to write this in!

I enjoyed this task as it was a quick and simple summary of media as a whole. It helped me engage with the fact that all media is useful in their own ways and not just something for leisure. Conference calls over the internet and emails being sent allow instant messages to be sent (a lot quicker than royal mail would get them there). Its impressive how a message can be sent to Australia from England within seconds. But anyways i'm going off track.

I've been asked to comment on why i didn't like this task but in my honest opinion i thought it was helpful. I suppose it could be made more interesting by adding more advanced interactivity such as videos and sounds. A little more colour could have been good too but that's all really.

So in summary the task was very helpful and i will be looking back on it numerous times to recap on the information within it.

1.Advertainment!

Advertainment sounds like a brilliant idea to me. It's quite something when the 'boring' adverts are replaced by something sometimes more interesting than the video you're intending on watching!

In the case of the Nokia online video (their advert) i think the way they advertised in this way was strange. The first time i watched 'the commuter'  i saw no clear indication that it was Nokia being advertised. The only way i could tell was from reading the title of the video. However when you read into the print you find that the advertising comes from the way the video was made as the whole film was shot on a Nokia phone. This changed the apparent poor advertising to being fantastic advertising as the film appears to be top quality!

i think this is a good way of advertising as it is entertaining and shows the phone in good use. I can't really think of much more to say about it at the moment but if i do i'll be sure to tell you!
